(DAYS 9 - 13 of RIO 2016):
This week is a lot like my first week in August was
here in Janetville. However, the weather
has been wetter and the lake has had some ugly white foam collecting on the
shoreline in the mornings.
We’ve been watching Blue Jay Games as before and
now, Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the most part.
I’m mostly interested in gymnastics, diving, swimming, and track and
field. Here’s the kicker – most of the
medals for Canada have been won by women!
Who’d have figured that? Awesome!
Today (Wednesday August 17th), James and
I are watching men’s decathlon featuring Damian Warner of Canada and Ashton
Eaton of the USA. But, no matter whom
the athletes are and which sports and events they compete in, I’ll still always
be interested in the acrobatic and artistic sports, like gymnastics and
diving. The most impressive female
gymnast in the Rio 2016 Games is Simone Biles of the USA. She won four gold medals and one bronze! And, it’s only her first Olympic Games! Another remarkable female athlete is Penny
Oleksiak, a Canadian swimmer who won four medals here – two silver and two
bronze! These two young women have done
truly amazing things in these Olympic Games!
Another amazing female athlete is Almaz Ayana of Kenya who won the
women’s 10,000 m race in world record time - in fact, she beat it by at least
fourteen seconds! Today (Friday August
19th), she is the favourite runner in the women’s 5,000 m race, but
I guess she wasn’t at her optimum because she came third after two Ethiopians.
The most impressive male athlete in the Rio 2016
Games is Andre de Grasse of Canada. He
went up against the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, where he
came third in the men’s 100 m sprint final and second in the men’s 200 m
final! Besides Usain Bolt and Andre de
Grasse, Michael Phelps of the USA has now become a swimming legend – with
twenty-seven medals won over five Olympic Games! Rio 2016 is his last Olympic Games (because
he is finally retiring) and he now has a record of medals that may never be
surpassed, at least not in my lifetime. Equally
awesome!
There are many Canadian and other athletes – male
and female – in many other Olympic sports, but I just wanted to mention the
most outstanding ones for now. The Rio
2016 Olympic Games aren’t over until Sunday August 21st and there
are still lots of medals to be won by Canadian athletes.
In today’s men’s decathlon, James and I are both
looking at Damian Warner of Canada who currently stands in first place at this
moment opposite Ashton Eaton of the USA who is in second. That probably will not last because Ashton
Eaton is the current world men’s decathlon champion. It will take a supreme performance in most of
the events for Damian Warner to overtake Ashton Eaton and win the decathlon. As it turns out, Damian Warner came in third
overall. Ashton Eaton won this event –
no surprise.
In terms of track and field, I am mostly interested
in the pole vault, high jump, long jump, and triple jump events, for both males
and females. (yes, it’s true, women do
pole vault too!). So far, I have the
men’s pole vault final results: BRA,
FRA, and USA; the men’s triple jump final results: USA, RSA, and GBR; and the women’s triple
jump final results: COL, VEN, and
KAZ. No Canadians (yet) have finished in
the medals in track and field.
Today, I have to check my Rio 2016 App on my new
cell phone for the final results in women’s pole vault and men’s and women’s
long jump and high jump, which will happen later this week.
Today, I had to call the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency)
to find out about a mysterious voicemail message I got regarding a tax
issue. As it turns out, there was
NOTHING in my CRA tax file and the CRA denies leaving any voicemail for me on
my cell phone. They told me that they
would have sent me some PAPER WORK first.
I told the CRA agent that I’d moved and had changed my mailing address
(to a temporary one) with everyone I know and deal with except the CRA. I then proceeded to file my change of address
with the CRA and promised I would call again in January 2017 with my new
address. I then called Brent at work and
told him that there was absolutely NOTHING in my CRA tax file and that we could
quit worrying. But, I still can’t help
wondering WHO left that mysterious voicemail threatening to take me to tax
court if I didn’t deal with this (non-existent) tax fraud I’d supposedly
committed. Brent thinks it’s a scam and
I suspect he’s right. All I can say is –
I’m glad Brent made me call the CRA and find out what was going on. I was scared to call them, but now it’s done
and I’m glad for that.
The Blue Jays played so well last night (Tuesday
August 16th) opposite the New York Yankees and are playing well
again today. Last night’s game started
looking like a washout, literally, until after a sudden rainstorm came and
went, then the Blue Jays really started to cook! Final score on Tuesday: 12-6, and today’s (Wednesday August 17th)
score: 7-3. Both games were won by the Blue Jays.
I called Rogers today to cancel all my services, but
it turns out only my wireless cell phone service still had to be
cancelled. And, I noticed that Kyle
still had not returned one of my Rogers adapters that should have been returned
for me in late May when I changed all my TV and Web services over to Bell. So, I called Dave to ask Kyle to please
return it – I don’t want to be charged for it if it’s not returned. Rogers then asked me to pay only the FINAL
bill. Tomorrow (Thursday August 18th),
I should call Johnson Inc. to please cancel my home insurance. I don’t need it anymore since I’ve sold my
house. So far, I’ve only sent Johnson an
email, but I will have to call them too to verify my request.
On Thursday, I actually did two loads of laundry for
Brent, James and me and folded everything, so at least I’ve earned my keep
there this summer, however, I did not mind doing it.
