(this narrative began from when I first landed in London on September 3, 2016)
Sunday
September 25, 2016:
This morning, we are not leaving Edinburgh, Scotland
yet. We are here for two nights in total. So, this morning, we got up early (for me,
6:15 am), got ready and had breakfast at 7:00 am, and then left for the city
tour of Edinburgh shortly after 8:00 am.
The city tour will only last for the morning. This afternoon, we are on our own.
A local guide introduced us to the 200-year-old “New
Town” as well as the much older “Old Town” of Edinburgh. We drove up the Royal Mile, a street for
shoppers, to visit Edinburgh Castle and then went on to visit the Queen’s
summer residence, Holyrood Palace. This
local guide was full of details about what Edinburgh was like as a place to
live in the 12th century and before, and it certainly didn’t sound
like a very clean or pleasant place to live in at all – full of filth and
disease. Thank God, modern Edinburgh
does not resemble the old Edinburgh in the least! I find it a very charming and lovely place
indeed and I would love to come back to visit someday.
I bought two souvenir books: one about Edinburgh Castle and one about
Mary, Queen of Scots because these topics are of great interest to me, full of
historical significance. And besides,
I’d never remember all of that history!
This way, I can read about their history at my leisure after I get home
in mid-October.
Tonight, I had dinner by myself at the restaurant
recommended by John Hood, our tour director.
It’s called Wetherspoon in THE WHITE LADY hotel, located just down the
street from our hotel. I ordered the BBQ
Chicken & Rib Combo and it was excellent.
I’ll have to mention this fact to John tomorrow morning before we take
off. We are supposed to wake up early
(for me, 6:15 am), have breakfast at 7:00 am, and leave Edinburgh at 8:00 am. I am really glad I was here for the city tour
because I don’t know if or when I will ever be able to return here.
Tomorrow morning, we are headed for Jedburgh,
Scotland, ultimately to arrive in York, England. There are no excursions scheduled for
tomorrow evening, so when we get to our hotel in York, we’ll have our dinner at
the hotel and then, hopefully, relax for the evening. I am getting pretty exhausted and need to
rest, as I’m sure most of us on the tour feel by now.
